Forskningsprogrammet genomförs i samarbete mellan de språkvetenskapliga sektionerna vid universiteten i Stockholm och Uppsala och den datorlingvistiska forskningsgruppen vid Uppsala universitet. Dess övergripande tema är olika aspekter av förståelse- och överföringsproblematiken. De 22 projekt som ingår spänner över varierande fält och språk men grupperar sig kring tre huvudteman : 1) kontrastiva studier av relevant textmaterial i form av original-texter och deras översättningar; 2) de historiska, kommunikativa och kulturella kontexter i vilka översättningen ingår; 3) själva översättningsprocessen med alla dess sociala, psykologiska, kognitiva och kommunikativa aspekter.

First call for participation
NODALIDA '01, the 2001 Nordic Conference in Computational Linguistics will be held at Uppsala, May 21-22, 2001, hosted by the Department of Linguistics at Uppsala University.
The conference is open for all branches of computational linguistics. The following topics for special sections have been selected: computational semantics, computer-assisted language learning, machine translation, and speech technology. Abstracts within these topics are particulary welcome. If you have suggestions for workshops or other topics relevant for special sections, please contact Mats Dahllöf (mats.dahllof@ling.uu.se).
The deadline for submission of abstracts is February 19, 2001. Abstracts should be written in Danish, English, Norwegian, or Swedish, and be no longer than 1000 words. Please submit your abstract by e-mail to Mats Dahllöf (mats.dahllof@ling.uu.se) in the form of plain text and in the body of the e-mail. (The HTML-tags <p>, <i>, and </i> may be used to indicate new paragraph and for emphasis, respectively.)
Participants will be notified about acceptance by April 2, 2001.

All proposals will be reviewed, and a selection of contributions will be published in the form of proceedings. The papers submitted will be rated. papers on theory-oriented and empirical research demonstrations of teaching and assessment methods and techniques in translation and interpreting training hands-on workshops on curriculum innovations, problem-solving and applications of particular teaching strategies posters on material developments and work in progress
For the purpose of the above conference, please note that the following definitions will apply:
PAPERS: (30 min) This format is best suited for theory-oriented presentations, or the presentation of completed research. These research paper presentations will be 20 minutes in duration, followed by 10 minutes for questions and comments from the audience.
DEMONSTRATIONS: (30 min) This format is suitable for showing, rather than telling, a technique or method for teaching and training in translation and interpreting. Demonstrations will be 20 minutes in duration, followed by 10 minutes of discussion with the audience.
WORKSHOPS: (1 hour) Workshops are intended to provide professional development opportunities for translators and interpreters.
POSTERS: Poster sessions will provide an opportunity for the presentation of work in progress and research that is being planned, as well as for the presentation of technological innovations. Each poster presenter will be allowed 5 minutes to introduce the project to the entire audience.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is February 25th, 2001. Papers presented will be published.

Till språkets lov nationell konferens för akademiska språklärare
Med anledning av det europeiska språkåret 2001 inbjuder Uppsala universitet till den första gemensamma nationella konferensen för universitets- och högskolelärare i språk.
Hennes Majestät Drottning Silvia kommer att öppna konferensen och hedra den med sin närvaro.
Konferensen välkomnar akademiska lärare i alla språk. Den får därmed en större omfattning än tidigare, men inordnar sig i raden av de ämneskonferenser som regelbundet arrangeras vid universiteten och högskolorna runtom i landet, och som vänder sig till de akademiska lärarna i de stora västeuropeiska språken.
Under två dagar vill vi sätta fokus på språkundervisningen inom den grundläggande högskoleutbildningen genom att ge alla dess företrädare tillfällen till diskussioner utifrån den nyckelroll som spelas av språkkunskaper och interkulturell kompetens i vårt samhälle.
Vi vill också belysa vårt gemensamma verksamhetsfält ur ett europeiskt perspektiv genom att uppmärksamma att Europarådet och EU har proklamerat år 2001 som det europeiska språkåret. Syftet med språkåret är att dels främja flerspråkighet, dels uppmuntra till livslång inlärning av språk.
Vi vill dessutom passa på att presentera delar av vår egen verksamhet i Uppsala och visa på bredden inom vår fakultet.

Globalization has brought a great increase in contact between cultures, which has had its impact on translation; in the last years of the second millennium, translation has experienced its greatest period of expansion ever. In spite of this overall growth, long-standing relationships of power have perpetuated the hegemony of some languages over others, and so access to the global translation market for different languages and cultures is unequal, as was shown in UNESCO's World Culture Report. According to 1994 statistics, 28,646 English works were translated into other languages, while less than 300 works were translated from languages such as Arabic, Chinese, and Portuguese.
The general topic of the Fifth International Conference on Translation will be the role of translation in intercultural relations, and special emphasis will be given to translation involving less-translated languages (LTLs). In this connection, the following subjects areas will be covered at the Conference:
· Translation from LTLs into other

· Translation into LTLs from other languages
· Translation between LMTs by means of a third language
· Translation and cultural imperialism
· Translation and cultural mediation
· Cultural competence in the training of LTL translators
· Translation theory in LTL-speaking countries

Call for Papers
Papers on the above topics and on other topics related with translation of LTLs are invited for submission. The scientific committee will consider all proposals, although preference may be given to those papers involving Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, and Russian, which are taught in the Facultat de Traducció i d'Interpretació of the UAB.

The deadline for submission is 30th April 2001. Abstracts should have a maximum of 300 words, and may be submitted in any language. However, if the language of presentation is not one of the official conference languages (Catalan, Spanish, French, English), it must be accompanied by a translation into one of these four languages. Translation Universals - Do They Exist?

The question of translation universals has been a bone of contention in translation studies since about the mid-nineties. To what extent is it possible - or even useful - to talk about 'universal' features in connection with translation? Is there something that translation (and translation processes) tend to share, independently of the particular languages, the social circumstances and the specific cognitive determinants involved?
A number of hypotheses have been suggested that might account for linguistic features of translated language, some verging on the cognitive processes involved. In the last few years, the issues have increasingly been put to empirical test by using electronic corpora, either consisting of comparable corpora (in one language) or parallel corpora (with source texts and their translations). The Savonlinna School of Translation studies has compiled a comparable corpus of translated and untranslated Finnish, with a group of researchers seeking answers to the plausibility of claims about linguistic translation universals as well as exploring what is specific to translated Finnish. We are organising this conference to engage in dialogue with colleagues concerned with similar questions from different perspectives. The emphasis will be on product-oriented studies of potential linguistic features on the one hand, and on cognitively-based process studies on the other, but we also welcome alternative viewpoints and different methodological and theoretical approaches.

Papers of 30 minutes each (including 10-minute discussion) are invited on questions of translation universals from different theoretical and methodological perspectives.
The conference language is English, but we also welcome presentations in German.

Grounding in English and Arabic News Discourse explores the discourse notion of grounding (viz. the foreground-background structure), and examines it in the various structures that occur in short news texts. A text-level approach to grounding and the differentiation between several core concepts relating to the various textual and non-textual structures, distinguish the book from other approaches in the field.
A corpus-based analysis focuses on sentence-initial expressions and examines the grounding-signalling function of several markers in both English and Arabic. The analysis captures constraints on the occurrence of particular markers, and the extensive illustrative examples explain the strategies that writers employ to cope with problems of recasting grounding-values in news texts. The author also shows how the failure to signal appropriate grounding-values is likewise associated with the failure to deliver the appropriate type of text.
Grounding is a relatively unexplored area of investigation in Arabic (text)lingusitics, and the study identifies a series of previously unrecognized language features, highlighting the discourse pragmatic function that syntax serves.
The book will be invaluable to researchers and students of discourse, pragmatics, contrastive rhetoric, and communication. It will also be of interest to all those involved in translation and intercultural studies.

For more than two decades following the "Chomskyan revolution" in the late fifties the emphasis in linguistics was almost exclusively on theoretical issues. The turbulent growth, over the past fifteen years or so, of computer science and in its wake the rise of language technology has led to a renewed interest in practical applications of linguistic theory. Word-processing, text-comprehension, dialogue systems, expert systems, (semi-)automatic translation, speech recognition and speech synthesis are all areas in which insights derived from linguistics are playing an increasingly important role. These new insights have been gained from corpus linguistics, work on automatic syntactic analysis, machine readable dictionaries etc.
The "Language and Computers" series aims to function as a platform for original and stimulating work in this wide and varied field. The essential ingredients characterizing the volumes in the series are already apparent from its title: As studies in linguistics they have, by definition, their foundations in linguistic theory; however, they are not concerned with theory for theory's sake, but always with a definite direct or indirect interest in the possibilities of practical application in this dynamic area where language and computers meet.

Revising and Editing for Translators provides guidance and learning materials for translation students learning to edit texts written by others, and professional translators who wish to improve their self-revision ability or learn to revise the work of others. Editing is understood as making corrections and improvements in a text, with particular attention to tailoring it to a given readership. Revising is this same task applied to draft translations. The combination of these functions reflects the need for professional translator-editors in large organizations. Mossop offers in-depth coverage of a wide range of tasks, including copyediting, style editing, structural editing, checking for consistency, the use of computer aids, revision parameters, degrees of revision, self-revision, and quality assessment. Due to the recent availability of large bodies of text and speech in electronic form, data-based research of all kinds has increased dramatically in areas such as computational linguistics and language engineering (especially corpus-based linguistics), speech, humanities computing, psycho-linguistics, and information retrieval. This series is intended to explore the methodologies and technologies that are emerging as a result of this work. In addition, while each of these disciplines has developed methodologies appropriate to its particular problem area, there is emerging a clearly defined set of technologies and methodologies common to all areas of research involving large quantities of electronic data. The series will be particularly concerned with methodologies and technologies with either actual or potential applicability to other areas. The topics covered by the series include but are not limited to:
* encoding and representation of text and
speech
* lexical statistics and quantitative word studies
* computational lexicography
* morphological analysis and part-of-speech tagging
* grammars and parsing technologies
* automated content and thematic analysis
* text databases and retrieval
* document analysis, automatic indexing and abstracting
* stylometry and computerized authorship discrimination
* text generation
* Message understanding
* text-to-speech and dictation systems
* speech synthesis and speech recognition
* phonological and prosodic analysis
The series will contain three general types of books:
* methodologies which survey major methodological
approaches in a given domain. Many of the methodologies emerging for
text-based work have never been considered collectively or
comprehensively, and there is a serious need for books which provide
an overview of the important approaches to certain problem areas.
* advanced research topics which treat in depth specific areas of
interest or projects at the state of the art. This type of book will
describe leading edge research on specific topics, whose
methodologies may only have begun to develop.
* tutorials which provide a general introduction to a particular
topic.
Because text based research has developed so rapidly in recent years,
there is a large number of researchers who are unfamiliar with basic
concepts and approaches. In addition, applicable methodologies which
may be well-developed within one discipline are often completely
unknown to researchers in another discipline.
Supplementary materials, such as, software, demonstrations, program libraries, etc. in appropriate forms (diskettes, web sites, etc.) will be included where appropriate.

The last two decades have shown a remarkable increase of research on communication and language use in specific social and cultural settings, ranging from broad and more or less heterogeneous communities to highly specialized professional organizations. This increase draws upon a manifestly growing cooperation between such diverse disciplines as text linguistics, discourse analysis, ethnography of communication, speech act theory, cognitive linguistics, educational linguistics, cognitive psychology and anthropology. Cooperative efforts from these approaches are essential in order to improve our understanding of:
* the functional quality of texts and text
features in view of the specific goals and the addressees of
professional and educational institutions
* the relationship between discourse and context in specific and
changing social and cultural settings, including multilingual and
multicultural interactions
* the cognitive basis of discourse processing in continuously
changing contexts, and the skills underlying goal-directed language
use in familiar as well as novel situations
* the acquisition of such flexible linguistic capacities in
educational settings.
At the Utrecht Institute of Linguistics of the Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht in the Netherlands, an interdisciplinary approach is being pursued directed towards developing and integrating theoretical insights in language use in specific social and cultural contexts, and in the processes, both in first and second language learning, by which people acquire the ability for such language use. The aim of the Utrecht Studies in Language and Communication is to publish results of research in this area, as well as immediately related areas.

The journal of the five-college seminar on literary translation in the Amherst, MA, area. It publishes both prose and poetry in translation, as well as articles dealing with aspects of the art of translation.
Published four times a year, the Translation Quarterly is the official publication of the Hong Kong Translation Society. The first of its kind in Hong Kong, the journal aims at providing a forum for the exchange of views and ideas concerning translation both as a professional activity and a field for scholarly investigation. Its first issue appeared in 1995, and since that time it has published articles, book reviews, articles and brief notices by over seventy translation scholars, teachers and researchers. Besides its bilingual format, the journal is also characterized by a concern with the special nature of translation as it is practiced and studied in Hong Kong.
